Bin Hire Questions, Answered
Everything you would normally phone a bin company to ask, in one place. Pick a topic or scroll through.
Choosing the right bin
What size, how many, and how to avoid paying for air.
What bin sizes can I hire?▼
Three wheelie bin sizes for commercial waste: 240L, 660L and 1100L. As a rough guide, a 240L holds about 3 full garbage bags, a 660L about 8, and a 1100L about 14. A 240L suits small offices, salons and cafes; 660L suits restaurants, gyms and retail; 1100L suits warehouses, food courts and high-volume sites.
What size do I actually need?▼
It comes down to how much waste you make between collections. Count your current bags per week, add a bit of headroom, and match that to a size. If you are guessing, use the bin calculator: pick your business type and staff count and it gives a recommendation. Most small businesses land on a single 240L or 660L weekly.
Should I get one big bin or two smaller ones?▼
Usually one bin sized for your volume is cheaper than two of a smaller size. The exception is when you want to separate waste streams, for example a general waste bin plus a cardboard recycling bin. Splitting recyclables out often lowers your total because recycling is collected at a different rate.
Can I change bin size later?▼
Yes. If your volume changes you can move up or down a size. We pass the request to your local provider and ask for a little notice so the swap fits their run. Any cost for the change sits with your provider and is shown to you before it goes ahead.
What if my bin is regularly overflowing?▼
An overflowing bin means you are either undersized or under-collected. The fix is one of three things: a larger bin, a second bin, or more frequent collection. Tell us your situation and we will work out the cheapest option that keeps the lid closing.
What can and can't go in the bin
Accepted waste, banned items, and weight limits.
What can I put in a general waste bin?▼
General commercial rubbish: packaging, food scraps, soft plastics, paper towel, broken items, and mixed waste that is not recyclable. Mixed waste is fine as long as you stay under the weight limit and keep out the banned items below.
What can't go in the bin?▼
No tiles, bricks, concrete, soil, rubble or other heavy building material, no liquids, no hot ashes, no batteries or gas bottles, no hazardous or chemical waste, no clinical or medical waste, and no asbestos. These either exceed the weight limit, damage the truck, or need a licensed specialist stream. If you are unsure about an item, ask before the bin goes out.
Is there a weight limit?▼
Yes. Bins are collected by a lifter with a safe working load, so weight matters as much as volume. As a guide a 1100L general waste bin caps at around 150kg. Dense waste like wet food or compacted paper hits the weight limit well before the bin looks full, which is why heavy material is best split across bins or collected more often.
What happens if there's a banned item in the bin?▼
Your local provider may leave the bin and flag it, or the load may be rejected at the depot, which can mean a contamination charge. It is cheaper and faster to keep prohibited items out. If you have a one-off awkward item, get in touch and we will point you to the right disposal method.
Waste types and recycling
General, cardboard, and organics, and why separating pays off.
What waste streams do you collect?▼
General waste across the areas we cover, dedicated cardboard and paper recycling, and organic and food waste where a local organics provider runs. Each stream uses its own bin so loads stay clean and you meet recycling targets.
Why bother separating cardboard?▼
Two reasons. Cardboard recycling is collected at a flat rate that is usually cheaper than general waste, so pulling boxes out of your general bin can shrink the size you need. And flattened cardboard takes up roughly 80% less space, so a recycling bin goes a lot further than it looks. Break boxes down before they go in.
Do you collect food and organic waste?▼
In areas served by an organics provider, yes, in a separate organics bin. Food and garden organics are kept out of landfill and processed into compost. Availability depends on your location, so check when you get a quote.
What is FOGO and does it affect my business?▼
FOGO stands for food organics and garden organics, collected separately from general waste. Some councils and states are moving to mandate organics separation for businesses. If that applies in your area we can set up an organics bin alongside your general waste so you stay compliant. Tell us your postcode and we will flag what applies.
Delivery, access and placement
Lead time, where the bin sits, and what the truck needs.
How quickly can a bin be delivered?▼
Typically within 3 to 5 business days of booking, timed to land on or before your first collection. If you need it sooner, get in touch and we will see what your local provider can do.
Where should I keep the bin?▼
Somewhere flat, on hard ground, with the lid able to open fully and clear truck access on collection day. A spot the driver can reach without moving cars or unlocking gates means your bin gets collected every time without a missed run.
What does the truck need to collect the bin?▼
Clear, unobstructed access to where the bin sits, with the lid closed and nothing stacked on top or beside it. If the bin is behind a locked gate or blocked by a vehicle the truck cannot collect it, which counts as a missed collection. Roll the bin to the kerb or an agreed access point if your usual spot is hard to reach.
Do I need a council permit?▼
Not if the bin stays on your own property, which is the normal setup. A permit only comes up if a bin needs to sit on a public footpath or road, which is rare for a standard wheelie bin. If your site needs that, tell us and we will sort out what is required.
Collections and scheduling
Frequency, collection day, and missed runs.
How often are bins collected?▼
Weekly or fortnightly. Weekly suits most businesses. Fortnightly is available for lower-volume sites and roughly halves your cost if your waste fits between collections.
Can I pick my collection day?▼
Your collection day is set by your local provider's route in your area, so it is assigned rather than chosen. This keeps the run efficient, which is what keeps prices down. You will be told your day before your first collection.
What happens if a collection is missed?▼
If your local provider misses a scheduled collection, contact them first and they will normally return, usually the next day. If the bin could not be reached, for example a locked gate or a blocked driveway, they will let you know what got in the way so it can be cleared for next time. Bin Hire Australia can help escalate a booking-related issue if you need it.
Can I change how often my bin is collected?▼
Yes. You can move between weekly and fortnightly with a bit of notice so the change can be fitted to the route. Step it up during busy periods and back down when things are quiet.
Can I pause collections for a shutdown?▼
Yes. For a holiday or seasonal shutdown your local provider can suspend collections and pick them back up when you reopen. Let us know your dates in advance and we will arrange it.

Pricing and what's included
How provider rates, GST and disclosed extra charges work.
How much does a bin cost?▼
Pricing is per collection and set by your local provider for your area, so it varies by location, bin size and how often you need a lift. The fastest way to see your exact rate is to enter your postcode on the quote page. Prices are shown exclusive of GST during booking and GST is added on the provider's invoice.
Is delivery included in the price?▼
Bin delivery and setup is part of the provider service described in the agreement. Bin Hire Australia charges you no delivery or setup fee, and the provider cannot add an undisclosed delivery charge after you confirm.
Are there any extra charges?▼
The price you see is your local provider's advertised rate for the collection, shown upfront before you book. Some providers may charge separately for things within your control, such as excess weight, contamination if banned items go in the bin, a futile (missed-access) collection, or a replacement if a bin is damaged through misuse. Any such charges are set out in your provider's service agreement.
Are prices inc or exc GST?▼
Prices are displayed exclusive of GST during the quote and booking flow. GST of 10% is added on your tax invoice. For example, a rate shown at $50 works out to $55 once GST is added. Enter your postcode to see your provider's exact figure.

How do I get a quote?▼
Go to the quote page, enter your postcode, pick your waste type, bin size and frequency, and you see pricing straight away. No waiting for a callback.
Can I book the whole thing online?▼
Yes. Quote, choose your setup, review the matched provider, rates and terms, then confirm online. Your provider commits the delivery date before service starts.
What do I need to book?▼
Your business and service address, waste type, bin size and collection frequency. Booking through Bin Hire Australia is free, so no card or payment details are required. If you are not sure on size, run the bin calculator first.
Can I add a bin to an existing service?▼
Yes. Many sites start with one bin and add a second waste stream later, for example cardboard recycling alongside general waste. Each bin is priced on its own, so you only pay for what you add.
