Grocery and Supermarket Waste Setup

Supermarkets generate heavy cardboard, organics, and soft plastics. Separate the streams and set pickups around delivery days.

Streams and bins

• Cardboard: 1100L or front-lift 1.5m3/3.0m3; flatten to maximise space.
• Soft plastics/stretch wrap: bale or bag; never in commingled.
• Organics: 240L liners; 3-5x weekly for produce culls.
• Commingled: bottles/cans from staff areas; keep away from sinks.
• General waste: front-lift for residuals.

Pickup timing

• Align lifts after major delivery days to clear docks.
• Increase organics in summer to control odour.
• If bins are half full for two weeks, drop a pickup; if over 80%, add one before upsizing.

Dock discipline

• Mark bin zones and keep paths clear for pallets and forklifts.
• Keep lids closed; rain adds weight and can increase fees.
• Train staff on what goes where using photos of store waste.
